I went with a 650 edelbrock, with an air gap intake. You can check for a vacuum leak by getting a can of carb cleaner and spraying down the intake area and listen for an rpm change.

Two mechanical cables to the throttle bell crank would be the foot feed cable that moves the throttle and the modulator cable to the transmission. That would indicate that the tranny is 700R4/4L60. That makes switching the TBI to carb a lot simpler. Then change the fuel pump out for something meant to give the 2-3 psi you will need at the carb. The original fuel pump should be pumping close to 22psi, way too much. It willl just flood the carb till gas comes out of your air filter in about 6 seconds. Look at an EVO, Eclipse, etc, making 500-700 on 8mm lines. Now crank the pressure upto 80psi and they'll be more than large enough.
